Ann's (the other Ann, the tall Ann, the Ann with the orange KitchenAid, Ann H.) birthday treat request was for something chocolate, and as we were having a picnic in Central Park, it had to be something portable. Preferably with no frosting or glaze involved. So, what to do but make some black-bottom cupcakes? I looked up a recipe (originally from The Great Book of Chocolate by David Lebovitz) on Smitten Kitchen, one of my favorite food blogs, and away I went. I looked through her post and then some of the comments from other readers. Deb of Smitten Kitchen said she'd had a hard time getting the cream cheese filling blobs centered (yeah, at least hers sunk, my cream cheese goodness is all on top) and one reader suggested covering the cream cheese bit with mini chocolate chips. I had imagined a layer of chocolate over the cream cheese when really what was I thinking, I just got mini chips scattered throughout the uncontrollably spreading blob known as cream cheese filling. Which is fine, it looked okay and tasted good so I can't really complain. Maybe these cupcakes just aren't meant to be conventionally pretty.

They Look scrumptious!
It is so funny that I made these cupcakes for a picnic Saturday as well. Mine melted and it was like eating pudding. Everyone still seemed to enjoy them.
