A recipe for a banana split bombe in the most recent Martha Stewart Living reminded me just how much I love a good ice cream bombe. Not only do they look fantastic all smooth and round, but what a lovely surprise everybody gets when you cut it open to reveal layer upon layer of different ice cream or cake or ganache or whatever you wanted to put in it. This one here has vanilla ice cream, chocolate ice cream, ganache, pistachio ice cream, and banana cake.

The watermelon one is pretty fancy pants, but the one I used to love making involved lining the bowl with raspberries, then layering vanilla ice cream and raspberry sorbet. You get this lovely dome of berries, which is pretty impressive by itself, and then the ice cream surprise inside. I did individual ones once to see how that went and they were fine, but I think I preferred the proportions of the larger one.
Once you get the concept of the bombe down, the possibilities are endless.

I have never heard of these! I love it!
I had never heard of these, until I saw the watermelon one. My little brother at the age of 15 saw it on tv once and made it for my little sister's birthday. We were all shocked. It didn't turn out quite so cute, but I was surprised how doable, but totally charming it was!
Okay, this is just amazing. I've never even heard of this. You've inspired me to try something new this summer. And...it will take me a summer to figure out how to make just one bomb(e?).
